Interpersonal communication: a dynamic form of communication between two or more people, where the messages influence thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships. Dynamic: constantly changing, no one interaction is the same, changes based on context (ie: communication with parents high school v college) Content: the meaning of what your saying, conveyed verbally through words. Relationship: the how you say it, and nonverbal, shifts and changes. How the way we talk tells us about power, intimacy. Issues occur when content and relationship relationships butt heads ; which causes misunderstandings. Is irreversible: once its out it can"t be taken back. Met by having satisfied relationships: tied to having good communication. Able to communicate ourselves and achievement to become ourselves. Use communication to present yourself the way you want. Instrumental goals: practical goals we want to achieve. Ipc competence: communicating in ways that are appropriate, effective, and ethical. More competence= higher relationship satisfaction, psychologically and physically more healthy, higher educational and job achievement.
