EESC1168 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Retaining Wall, Shear Strength, Shear Stress
Document Summary
Land moves because the shear stress on the slope exceeds its shear strength. Shear stress: force per unit area, parallel to the slide. Shear strength: resistance of the slope to movement. Land position reflects the forces acting on it. When land is at rest, shear strength > shear stress. Either shear strength decreases or shear stress increases. A landslide reflects a change in the relative strengths of the shear strength and stress, making the shear strength less than the shear stress. This change can happen slowly over time or all at once. Mass movements are classified based on velocity and water content. Common names for different types of landslides ( mass movements") based on the velocity and water content. In general, faster flows are more deadly, but all have caused deaths and property damage. 3 movement categories: falls, slides, and flows. Falls - free fall, dominantly vertical downward movement.
