Students with severe and multiple disabilities must have access to the general curriculum in addition to functional curriculum/life skills. Balance educational, therapeutic, and health care needs. Educational considerations for students with severe and multiple disabilities. Equal educational opportunities - you won"t achieve equal educational outcomes, but can you can provide equal opportunities. Direct teaching - break down tasks, use repetition, drilled instruction, carryover lesson to lesson. Curriculum adaptation - requires a bit of creativity. Augmentative and alternative communication (aac) - main priority for students who don"t have functional speech. Behavior management - students may have acting out behaviors, self-injurious behaviors, etc. Transition skills - prepare for life after 22, look for supported work environment, group home, etc. Curricular relevance - teach things that are meaningful to the individual student. In massachusetts, all students are required to take mcas, but students with severe and multiple disabilities take the mcas alternate assessment - submit portfolio.
