Speech-language pathologist (slp) - those qualified individuals who diagnose, prognose, prescribe for and/or remediate speech and/or language disorders. Communication disorder - an impairment in the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts of verbal, nonverbal and graphic symbol systems. May be evident in the processes of hearing, language, and/or speech. May range in severity from mild to profound. Individuals may demonstrate one or any combination of communication disorders. May result in a primary disability or it may be secondary to other disabilities (ex: autism) Speech disorder - an impairment of the articulation of speech sounds, fluency and/or voice. Dysarthria - lack of control over speech sounds, can"t control larynx, throat, tongue, etc. speech is labored, slow, slurred, and imprecise. Apraxia - disruption of motor planning slow, effortful, and inconsistent speech. The speaker is often aware of the mistakes, which can be very frustrating.
