Sit down, commanded frankenstein to his newborn creation, sit down! he forced the mute, illiterate beast to sit in a chair. It was the first and only action the monster would ever comprehend. Meanwhile, on paper, the same infamous monster hovered outside a quaint cottage in the forest, learning to read, write, speak, and become civilized. The former monster belongs to james whale"s film, Frankenstein, while the latter is a part of mary shelley"s novel, frankenstein. These two monsters may seem almost completely polarized one being defective, and the other being receptive but both are murderers: whale"s monster kills frankenstein himself, while shelley"s monster kills frankenstein"s loved ones. In these ways, both monsters epitomize the consequences of creating life. This theme, in fact, connects the film to the novel. However, within this thematic similarity, the two monsters are dissimilarly portrayed.
