• Nuremberg Laws 1935
o Nuremberg city in south east Germany
o Laws define what it means to be a Jew
o This was important because they were denying Jews citizenship
o State led legally binding genocide
o Main founding blocks of what would later become the holocaust
o Once you are defined as a Jew you are always a Jew
• Holocaust didn’t explicitly start in 1935. It was an important milestone.
• “Sonderweg” means a special path in German
o Germany was always meant to be a dominant country and the holocaust was
necessary for them to help them rise
• Could the Holocaust have happened anywhere?
o Happened in Germany because of the rise of particular leaders and their economy.
o Technology made things systematic. You can have the intention but a means
makes the difference.
o It’s not black and white. There are definitely some ideas for both arguments
o Hunger and cold fighting for the spring
o Removed from civilization
Outside of the camp vs. inside of the camp
o The importance of possessions
Treating other people as if they are not people
Allows you to take advantage of people as if they aren’t the same as you
o Learn to appreciate the tiny parts of life
o Relationships with other people in the camp and the boy outside of the camp
Person in the camp that treated him less horribly than the others
Helped them maintain their sense
