The French Revolution and Imperial Aftermath
The American revolution, French revolution, Haitian revolution inspired more, more of the Latin
states gained their independence
The loss of western colonies made Britain to look eastward, India, China, became involved with
Premodern world authorities was the bibles and the model of ancient societies.
Modern world authorities was the enlightenment and new knowledge, experiencing knew and
unknown things shaped the society, rational thought gave authority to new actions. Observation
The relationship between the community and the individual, individual was defined by the
community, modern world the individual began to define itself it wasn’t based on bloodline more on
what you can do and your actions. People tried to reinvent themselves
Causes of the revolution: growing difference between the rich and the poor, you were locked in the
class that you were born into. Famines wars and diseases created a tougher life for those on the
bottom of social classes, and allowed the rich to have more extravagant lives with slaves and
servants which then created mass resentment by the poor people
Three Estates: How the society was ordered: Clergy or people in religious orders, France was
still catholic, this was known as the first estate. Clergy were often aristocrats at birth. Owned about
10 percent of the arable land. Second estate: the aristocracy. Owned about 30 percent of the
ardble land. Third Estate: was everyone else. Merchants, peasants, townspeople, artisans. The
3 estate was supporting the first and second estate.
King Louis 16 state was in fear of bankruptcy. He called a meeting of the estates general,
but one hadn’t been called in 145 years, but he needed some sort of public backing to push
through the hard times. Absolute monarchy was not going to well for him. The political
atmosphere heated up when elected members to sent to the estates general. Top issue: how the
estates general would vote. 3 estate wanted to change things so that each delegate had a vote.

Members of the 3 estate wanted a constitution saying that the people were sovereign not the King.
3 estate wanted a constitution. They took matters into their own hands and created the National
Assembly that would represent the peoples voice
Created by the 3 estate, the king tried to dispend it. They invited members of the 2 and 3 rd
estates. It was the new form of parliament that the 3 estate created. People in Paris thought that
the King was going to take away what the 3 had been doing, so the people revolted. The people
wanted to be fed, and they wanted bread because people were really hungry, which drove the
Storming of the Bastille Bastille was the state prison where people were kept for crimes like poverty and stealing bread.
Many people in the 3 estate thought they were keeping people there unjustly, and they wanted
people to be released but the government did not agree so the people stormed the Bastille and
decapitated everyone in change to release all th
