Peter the Great and the Rise of Modern Russia
• Peter the Great made reforms that pushed Russia forward
• Used to celebrate their NYE on August 31st
o In 1699, they changed it to December 31st
o Drink and party for 7 days
• Laid foundation for modern Russia
• Peter = father of the fatherland
o coming out of the Romanov dynasty
o incredibly strong and healthy, which was weird
o outdrink everyone except the clergy
o house was perceived as politically weak and suffered to the boyars who were the upper
nobility and had real political power
