MGMT1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Career Development, Implicit Attitude, Ingroups And Outgroups
3/22-- Group Process: Diversity
What is Diversity:
- The degree to which a work group or organization is heterogenous with respect to
personal and functional attributes
- The presence of differences among members of a social unit
Types of Diversity:
Surface Level
-generally immutable
-Almost immediately observable
-Measured In simple and valid way
-Eg: race, ethnicity, sex age
Deep Level
- Subject to more construal
- More mutable
- More challenging to measure
- Eg: attitudes, knowledge, values, skills morals, religion
Why Diversity Matters?
1) Diversity becoming a new normal
2) Access diverse customers/ recruit top talent
3) Makes us smarter
Attracting top talent:
- People want to working an environment where they :
- See people who are similar to themselves
- Feel confident they will not be marginalized or excluded based on differences
- Perceive opportunities to grow and advance regardless of surface or deep level
differences
Reaching Customers
-Diversity allows you to:
● - understand the unique perspectives, needs and preferences of diverse
customer segments
● - access customers who can’t be reached through traditional shaes channels
● -Communicate the value of products and service in ways that resonate w
customers from diverse backgrounds.
Makes us Smarter:
- Scientific breakthroughs due to group diversity
- Discovery of double helix DNA:
- Crick: amateuer scientists with interst in bio, chem, physics no phd
- Watson: phd in zoology

Access customers who can"t be reached through traditional shaes channels. Communicate the value of products and service in ways that resonate w customers from diverse backgrounds. Crick: amateuer scientists with interst in bio, chem, physics no phd. Made fewer errors, shared more info and deliberated longer. Female rep in top mgmt leads to increased firm performance.
