Document Summary

Flow time: the total time spent by a flow unit within process boundaries. Flow rate: the number of flow units that flow through a specific point in the process per unit of time. Inventory: the total number of flow units present within the process boundaries. In a stable system (i. e. average inflow rate = average outflow rate): average inventory = throughput x average flow time, i = r x t. Must assume that rate is constant throughout. Example: movie theater: the rate of people coming in is 50 people/hour, 50% go straight to the movie after buying their ticket and 50% go get candy. New rate of people getting candy 25 people/hour. New rate of people going straight to the movie 25 people/hour. Examples: you go to work out. Calories burned = rate of burning calories*time spent working out: you are driving somewhere. Can manipulate the equation to make it work so you can find rate and time.
