Mental life in sleep: mental life primary process: earliest way of thinking (imaginary cause and effect, we unwillingly enter this world but we need sleep to bear reality. Reality is hard to bear because reality does not agree with our internal wishes and feelings: unconscious thoughts invading our reality. We have trouble remembering dreams because they don"t match with our lives. We can be triggered to remember dreams very randomly. Dreams reveal processes of repression which mark hysteria and pathology. We build symptom in same way as a dream. Doesn"t want to tie hysteria with pathological illness. Argument that dreams are a result of biological factors like sexual excitation, pee, alarm clocks. Freud dreams that the pope dies when church bells ring.
