Description
SC089.01 (09.26.2013) Racial Identity and Body Image (continued) (Slides from 09.18.2013) Black Ideals of Beauty  Voluptuous, big chest, big butt, fullfigured—the attitude about having a fuller figure is  different HesseBiber’s Research Goal: Explore lived experiences of African American females  regarding their transition to predominantly white colleges Specifically interested in lived contexts prior to college (family/community, peer  groups, transition) Theoretical Approach: Adopted definition of “selfconcept” Self concept: An idea of who you are based on Contingencies of selfworth Identity (shaped by individual and collective experiences) Self esteem Corporate image (a “shared reality—“public face”) Data Analysis: 4 groups of women 1. Selfconcept contingent on identification with white culture prior to coming to  college, more susceptible to selfesteem/body image issues 2. Identified with black culture before and during college, gender identity closely  associated with black pride/black beauty ideals 3. Floaters or outsiders: Identity floats between group 1 and group 2, if either  black or white identities are not validated, they experience selfesteem and body  image issues—there is the perception that they are “neither black enough nor  white enough” Become “codeswitchers” 4. Bridge Builders: Self concept contingencies do not include race as a primary  definer, not aligned with one racial/cultural group This is as a result of lived experiences in highly diverse communities and  schools or of being mixed race Gender identity is less tied to beauty ideals of either white or  black culture *These differences may be explained by: Racial identity of family, ideologies, school  environment, neig
