Technology and Society Lecture 1: Overview September 6 , 2013 • Typing and the Keyboard o 1868 – Christian Latham Sholes invented the typewriter (patent) o keyboard layout was originally alphabetical and in 2 rows  eventually became the QWERTY system • looks the way it does because keys were getting jammed in  alphabetical order because common letters were right next  to one another •  Carls Glidden and James Denmore   helped Sholes taught  about digraphs (i.e. with a Q you need a U) o so…separate digraphs  o Glidden and Denmore go to buy keyboard and sell to Remmington (gun  manufacturer – 1873) o 1873­78 only 5,000 typewriters sold  Invention wasn’t taking off because it was an awkward machine;  the page went backwards and could not see what typing  Mark Twain was one of the first buyers o 1878: Remmington 2  ▯eliminate jamming, and can see what writing; shift  key  1878­1900: about 1,000 typerwriters/year o Sholes wants to change to layout but Remmington did not want to change o 1932: Dr. August Dvorak set out to create a better keyboard using logic  and research  studied real typists  developed the Dvorak keyboard layout • revolutionary because of the home/middle row (where
