Paul:
● Originally called Saul, but after persecuting a follower named Stephen he was visited by the
reincarnate Jesus, blinded, and became a follower
● His letters make up most of the new testament
● Focuses
○ Parousia
○ Agape
○ New communities
● Parousia:
○ Christ event (death and resurrection of Jesus)
○ Makes it possible for humans to be justified before God
○ Parousia - second coming / return in glory in judgement to benefit humans
● Apostle
○ “One most recently called”
○ Pharisee
○ Considers his time to be “evil” and the Parousia will cleanse him and humanity of
said evil
○ Believes parousia is imminent
● Galatians
○ Paul writing to many small churches in the area
○ Calls himself an apostle
■ A witness or proclaimer sent by Jesus and God
■ Also done in 2 Corinthians likely to prove his authority
○ Source of authority
■ Never met Jesus (story in Acts was the risen Jesus)
■ Later than the 12
■ Needs to argue for authority and respect
■ “Sent neither by humans nor from human authority”
○ Problems in Galatians
■ Theology - what about the Torah and it’s laws
■ Institutions - who was the authority to decide
○ Galatians rejecting Paul’s gospel

■ Mixed populations make it hard to enforce laws for both Jews and Gentiles in

■ Followers who think adherence to Torah is necessary for all
