Wednesday, February 22, 2017 Lecture 14 Gospel of Luke Luke is much more stylistic, very purposeful writing lukes point in writing: so you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed Lukes purpose centers on his belief that the stories of Jesus are true and are ample of being confirmed uses research to get an orderly account, investigated (using historical method available to him) Luke knows there are many accounts, but wants to write the truth of the matter worried about fitting into grecoroman world of historical biographies (that were often mystical, written to prove a point Compare Luke to GrecoRomans Herodotus Josephus Luke vs other gospels Luke is very educated, wants to set apart from other gospels clearly written at a later time, as opposed to an eye witness account anonymous, but connected w a character named Luke Luke the beloved Physician Major Focus of Luke: economic disparity example: Beatitudes Matthew 5 (sermon on the mount) VS Luke 6 (sermon on the plain) 1
