Sunday, March 26, 2017 1 and 2 Thessalonians Course Notes focus on the rapture (the coming of the lord) people suddenly just disappear? maybe not what paul intended 1 Thessalonians The First of Pauls Letters (oldest) paul traveled there gets to the issue of eschatology (reflection on end times) same ideas in other texts (ex: Mark 9:1 mark expects jesus to come back, just much sooner) historical sitatuion: new believers experiencing persecution after paul had to leave the city worried about how they will respond paul hears from timothy that all is going well, writes 1 thes in response, addresses questions about the future because its an early letter, not all of the theological ideas of christianity are established at this point, so there is a lot of uncertainty (especially with end times, death, etc) thesis of the letter: is it in the thanksgiving? love, faith, hope 1 thes 1:23 ideas mentioned again at the end of the book: 1 thes 5:8 end faith, love, and hope bookend the the letter, suggesting it is certainly one of the main ideas faith and love ch 13, hope in ch 4 paul focuses on faith in ch 1 1
