Jesus’s Death and Transformation  10/24/2013 Borg’s five understandings of Jesus’s death: 1) political­ political and religious authorities killed Jesus (Gods vindication ­> Jesus­> resurrection)  2) political, “defeat of powers” domination systems basically kill people when people resist it, mechanism of  violence, what seals that is the resurrection that despite human violence that does not stop the power  of God from continuing to be active  3) Jesus as the revelation of “the Way” the path towards being resurrected on a personal level and  psychological spiritual transformation process  4) revelation of the love of God for us; by giving his son to be killed it shows his unconditional love for  humanity  5) Jesus died on the cross for the sins of others (most popular view in the West) King’s View of the Cross Full of paradoxes but focuses on the positive dimension (redemption) All inclusive love; wanted to save non only blacks but hateful whites Path▯ not something to just think about but something to practice and live by  Suffering as path to redemption  If you take the sacrificial metaphor of Jesus’s death literally you forget that Jesus taught (blessed are the  poor, he
