THTR1170 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Peloponnesian War, Trojan War, World View
Document Summary
Can"t speak at a normal pace though you can talk at a normal pitch. The greeks had a verbal practice that was like chanting. It continues this ceremonial feel, religious context of giant festivals but allowed people a chance to hear it. For the greeks it was likeness to life but more o a performance for the content of the conversation. Men would change masks to change characters. There are never more than three actors on the stage at one time. The choral odes were sung and choreographed. The masks were big and broadly painted (want to make it seen by 15,000 people) This is when democracy was about to form. Tragedy was birthed in terms of the great time of civilization. It was coming out of a bursting time. Pity and fear were inspired in knowing the story. In knowing it as a shared thing and letting it be your story.
