Symbolically, tristan stands for brittany, isolde for ireland, and mark for. All three characters speak celtic and are bound by the celtic myths. Tristan excoriated (censored) himself to win the favor of and impress the cornish courts. He loves isolde, but for a while it is in an admiration-from-afar kind of symbolic love, a love that indicates respect. Tristan is a courtier, who fulfills his life purpose at court. He is a man, but a chivalrous one. In some ways he is a lady"s man, like a classic prom king. In other ways, he is a bit like the precursor to a renaissance man. Tristan"s love goes wrong when he and isolde act on it, hurting the king.
