Devonshire is expansive, while the new cottage is small. Fluid location has a cinematic quality to it. No blackouts indicated, which means it is a stylized piece and transitions have to be woven into the play. The original novel was realism, but kate hamill (the dramatist) does not care about realism. Dramatist"s description of time and place inform the reader/actor/director/designer how to interpret the design and acting choices of the piece. Light helps with with location shifts and passage of time. Set should be uniform(ish) and on casters to move the set pieces easily. Not too grand, so that people can move. Small pieces to change character or indicate passage of time. Is there opportunity for sequences of movement (aka choreography) How closely do the actors follow the movement habits of the time. What possibilities are there for metaphorical staging. It"s an opportunity for them to give over to someone else, which is the message, in part, of the poem.
