Dislikes the traditional christian faith and practices because of his quaker upbringings and social anthropology. Develops an interest in studying unfamiliar cultures and primitive peoples. Ethnography and ethnology- description and scientific analysis of an individual society. Sidenote: muller believes religion myth culture, keys are in language. Words for nature become personified, and create gods. All the world is a single continent. Uniformity of mind unites human race- same mental mechanical processes. Myths arise under genders of language and influences, and out of natural inclinations to make analogies between human activities and natural processes with one job. Spirit of a tree becomes spirit of the tree, gods get huge jobs instead of a god. Primitives animate natural things and think of objects having personal characteristics.
