Gothic was a movement within the high middle ages, after the crusades and beginning of towns, from 1000 to the black death. First gothic model was st. denis, designed by suger on the ile de france as a competition among church people. Support outward pressure of walls like books on a bookshelf. Spiritual reasons-- jesus was called the light of the world . So people believed light contained a divine presence and symbolized god in and with us. Stained glass transformed the light as it filtered through the windows, and symbolized that light is living and moving, like. Also colored so that it could hit the floors and walls and paint them. Rose window- usually dedicated to virgin mary.
