One of the church fathers and early church theologians. Supported free contractor teachers who worked from street corners, and taught independently. Astrolabe- star navigational tool, also the name of son of abelard and heloise. Heloise- would have become a nun or prostitute after marriage. She and abelard had an affair until she got pregnant, and then she became a nun. Encouraged his students to question and discuss, based off the teaching of the sophists. Wanted to shake things up by trusting logic. Dialectic is two people debating, insteading of monologuing. Cleans things out and sharpens points of arguments. Modern legal courtroom is based off of dialectic. Did believe in ultimate truth that can be achieved through dialectic. Developed a new educational approach called scholasticism, in which both sides discuss and then come to a conclusion. Thing are left out and do not address answers, but the key is the truth or conclusion.
