Aristotle believed in for causations that gave the sacraments true cause: Material- the physical substance of the sacrament. Formal- the shape, words, and process of the sacrament. Instrumental- the maker or minister of the sacrament. He also believed that all four causations were necessary for the sacrament to succeed. But none were sufficient without the purpose. No one, including aristotle, tried to explain god. God has no form or material and is above causation, so god must be the final cause. Not all seven have to be observed, but, when a sacrament is performed, it is treated as an oath, as well as an affirmation of faith and a promise. Medievals thought that knighting was a sacrament until the church stepped in to explain that it was not. A body of law put together during the start of universities, to explain what was what.
