Dante was a poet and a sort of theologian, since he wrote about faith, hope, and love. Love for dante was defined as religious love, or charity. He was born in florence in 1265. He was born a guelph, a political group that supported the papacy. After a war between the guelphs and the ghibellines (who supported the holy roman emperor), the guelphs won. The guelphs then split into black guelph and white guelph factions. Dante, a white guelph, supported the papacy, while the black. Guelphs wanted to break away from rome and have more freedom. Eventually, the black guelphs took control of florence and exiled. Dante wrote the divine comedy: inferno, purgatorio, and paradiso during his exile. It was written around the time dante was 35, midway through our life"s journey . 30s were considered the midlife by the bible, so the story is dante"s fictional midlife crisis, essentially.
