Thompkins escaped and was running away from the law for abut a year before he was found, arrested and charged for the murder of morris. In this time purifoy was acquitted of the assault and murder charges. Miranda rights in a written form, but only gave verbal consent and confirmation that he understood them. The officials did not ask him if he would like to waive his miranda rights and then proceeded to interrogate him for three hours. Thompkins stayed silent most of the three hours except for very limited response like a nod.
