Anthro lecture 3: coming of age in pennsylvania or margaret mead. Margaret mead is not a progressive but a modernist. Mead argues that anthropology needs to reach people around the world. Focus is on the group of anthropologist who began to use culture as central concept to make reasonable and persuasive arguments(logos) about the human(anthropos) Many of them were trained by franz boas, thus they are called boasians. Until the mid 19th century, culture in the english language was the distinctive possession of cultured people, that is elites who were raised with proper manners. The majority of people were uncultured: that is, they had no culture. But by the mid 19th century, new ways of thinking about culture began to emerge, that did not give culture only to the elites.
