Each unique culture was shaped by its own unique history. Culture area: a geographic unit of culture defined by contiguous distributions of similar cultural elements. Direct historical approach: cultural continuity between past and present people trace the culture back and look at how the material culture of specific people changed/ developed over time. Define (cid:685)culture(cid:686): a set of rules that are shared and learned by members of a specific group that determines their patterns of behavior. Prescribed the proper way to manufacture/use/dispose of material culture. Each culture had a tolerated range of behavior (ie on how they would build and use houses) Concept of cultural relativism: each culture is unique and different in its own right. Believed that no two cultures would be characterized by the same cultural norms. Johnson talks about the english and the french and the differences between their cultures.
