Strong tangled magnetic fields cancel out and causes flares. Auroras occur after magnetic field twang and change electric fields. 1859 carrington event: wires in telegraph systems on fire. They seem darker because they"re cooler but they are still warm. Hot ionized gas is being inhibited from rising to the surface.
