Document Summary
Seasons: the tilt is important but it doesn"t mean that different parts of earth are closer to the sun. The sun is up higher and has a beam that intersects less with the ground. Very slow drift of planets during the weeks and the months. Still rising in the east, setting in the west. Stellar maps: west is to the right, east is to the left. When looking at the interior planets, not the exterior planets can you see retrograde motion. Satellites: jupiter has things orbiting it, then maybe it"s true that not everything orbits the earth. Galileo: ptolemaic system can not be right. Saw a partial solar eclipse at age 14. Decided to measure very accurate positions of planets (mainly mars) Johannes kepler: hired by tycho to analyze the data. Planetary orbits are elipses, not circles with the sun as focus. A line between the sun and a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times.
