Document Summary
Discourses of calamity in a liberal technocratic age: its about political economy. Apparatus shielding society from what it does not want to face: lots of people could be vulnerable but it is not talked about. Foreshortened time horizons: it wont happen to me/us. Where you begin the story changes the story. Telling one story over and over creates stereotypes. Said on orientalism, empire and the archive. The orient as a creation of western expertise: body of knowledge built up historically. Other-ing : what it means to be western/not western. Archive of persistent knowledge: social/historical/colonial processes, even in modern times. Empire: all of these areas were colonies at some point, the knowledge production belongs to the people in power. The orient was approached systematically as a topic of learning, discovery and practice. Held together by idioms, desires repressions investments projections. Promotes the difference between us and them. West defined by the orient as much as it defines the orient.
