There are four autonomous subfields: world studies, citizenship studies, global citizenship studies, internationalization of k-12 public education goal to cultivate in students an awareness of global reality towards creating a peaceful world. In us the goal to foster a peaceful world has competed with ethnocentric, nationalistic arguments for education. Has led to a mix of idealistic cosmopolitan and pragmatic nationalistic orientations to global education.
