Document Summary

Woman is singing (song within the song of the poem) but her song is inaccessible to reader; speaker gives a a theory of it. Strangely, no explicit i, but we still get a sense of a single speaker. We"re called into the poem, but stevens assumes even more that we"re willing to play, silently incorporated. Who else felt disturbed/surprised when rf kicks us out of the we lol (like the switching between woman"s song and the poet"s, we"re switched out with ramon. Fernandez who"s been there the whole time) (also, we could include rf and us) impossible lashing together of poetry/imag. Poet/poem aren"t just mediums - active marker. Woman translates the sea into human terms. Poem = process of translation, makes something beyond the ocean (as in next to or beside - not really the ocean) Both celebrates the awesome power of the artist while recognizing that the world represented is in some sense inaccessible.
