Document Summary

Jason"s not simply a total jerk - importantly connected to broader culture. Characters are racist/sexist - but harder to say that about the novel itself. Faulkner puts distance between the story told and the mode of its telling in the first 3 sections. W/ the first two, we can"t help but be radically aware of the way we"re asked to suspend our disbelief. W/ jason, we don"t want to espouse his views; can identify w/ him as narrative. Pov but we don"t want to identify w/ him largescale critique of early 20th century southern white culture entirely from the inside. Actively questions/works against it, b/c there"s always that ironic distance between (all narration is unreliable; these are just unreliable in very particular ways. Benjy is super reliable w/ his perfect memory + he doesn"t have the capacity to deceive; but underdetermined narration. Quentin isn"t intentionally unreliable, but he overdetermines everything. Narrators themselves can"t see their reality clearly)
