Roman painting roman painting = wall painting, within houses and buildings. Panels were used for public events and buildings but have not survived, we only have the wall. Eruption in ad 79, communities were buried in ash, frescos last very well under this condition. Almost every house had wall paintings all around, common people no one important lived there. Usually roofs and ceilings do not survive. Little paintings set into the wall which feature painted doors. Hip herm caryatid: figures that emerge from the pillars. Bedroom (cubiculum) decorated as a faux pinacoteca (picture gallery) Paintings were installed into the surface of the wall. Supported by figures of sirens, apt choice to depict the female musicians. Painted marble does not seal in the colors. Could have been bought as an antique/earlier style. Began preserving and roofing in the 20th century. Atrium and tablinum and connecting open spaces, marble appearance and furnishing.
