Quest for independence in colonial africa took various forms in different countries. Period of proto-nationalism period before 1939 or 1945. Looking for a much more comfortable existence than trying to undo the colonial situation. Labeled as reformists do not want drastic changes. Leadership from the proto-elite not super educated, but enough to write letters, newspaper columns, petitions, etc. Even in period before 1945, a lot of the colonies have a lot of grievances. Demonstrating and asking for change of those particular grievances, but not asking for the dismantling of the colonial system. Many institutions through which those pleas are going to be made whether through indigenous vernacular newspaper. Same is replicated in other parts of the colonies in a different format. Only applied to africans, contained in a metal container that you wore around your neck. (1915) Then affected by the first wwi, implemented in 1919 postwar. Used to very effectively curb desertion from ones place of work.
