But, some women had to work (lower class: working women were often socially ostracized. Telephone operating became another alternative to factory work. Hourly work differentiated by bells, extreme supervision, Glass ceiling management structure where women would supervise other women but could never be top level managers. Femininity, docileness, and obedience used to code certain jobs only for women. Less skilled office jobs (white collar) became suited for women, seen as more respectable for middle class women. Increases in positions grew, but increases were concentrated in less-skilled subfield. Gendered professions enabled the persistence of wage differentials. Men, not wanting their jobs to become feminized. Home patriarchy extrapolated into business world that culturally creates a glass ceiling.
