Document Summary

How does the war to end all wars create a new war? how does germany go from humiliated loser to a huge threat? rise of fascism can be seen as one part of broader crisis of modernity. Embrace of the violent/unsettled, rather than the peaceful/settled - not b/c it"d lead to a better end, but b/c they"re ends in themselves. Part of larger project of rejecting civilization + search for new answers. War ends nov 11 1918, treaty of versailles signed jun 28 1919 from the moment versailles is signed, becomes object of violent rejection. Complex situation of how to deal w/ crises the war created. Victorious pwrs were liberal democracies, govts beholden to ppl; those ppl wanted blood they believe in self-determined ppls, but want to punish these ppl to prevent them from ever rising again. Want permanent peace, but also want to punish the ppl who are seen as having begun the war.
