INTEGBI 31 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sensory System, Natural Selection, Olfaction
Document Summary
Animals eat to acquire energy and nutrients for growth, survival and reproduction. Natural selection favors modes that most efficiently and accurately provide information about the location of food. Mechanoreceptors - sensory receptors sensitive to changes in pressure (used for hearing and for detecting their own body position and orientation. Provides information about water pressure or movement that can indicate the presence of other organisms. ) Lateral line system: pits and tubes that run along the side of the fish"s body which provide information about water velocity and acceleration and the direction of water movements. Track wakes left by moving animals and objects. Can determine the shape of the body which left the ripples. Vibrations - ex: spider hears with very tiny hairs on their legs and can localize the origin of a sound by interpreting the movement of the air produced by that sound. Echolocation - using sound of figure out the location of the prey.
