Document Summary
People who are nostalgic about mussolini"s rule. It is technically against the law to support fascism but the law has no teeth. Still fasces on public buildings (very different because no swastikas in germany) It used to be all marsh land and was very malarial". Huge public works project under fascism which turns the area into 300 square miles of agricultural lands by digging canals. After the project people from northeast italy came and settled the area: look very different from the locals and speak a different dialect, different customs. The area became a fascist utopia/dystopia: each family got their own settlement, separate from one another, very closely monitored by the state, incentives to have large families ( pro-natalism ) People in this area did very well economically. The descendants of these people are the ones who are nostalgic about mussolini. There are still portraits of mussolini hanging and people who openly wear fascist uniforms.
