LD ARCH 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Adaptive Capacity, Greenhouse Gas, Urban Forest
Document Summary
Urban forest: trees and other vegetation in a city: urban forests exist and are maintained only through human intervention. Urban forest sustainability should be driven by what trees need, what people need, Urban forests contribute to climate change by controlling greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions by capturing carbon: they also reduce energy use due to the shading effect that effectively spaced trees cast. Stresses to urban trees: small root space, soil compaction, poor soils, poor provision of water, destructive building. Climate change leads to changes in ecosystem quality >changes in forest habitat. Climate mitigation: decrease of ghg emissions bigger and younger trees capture more carbon. Climate adaptation: adjustment in response/anticipation to changing environmental conditions: depends on system"s vulnerability, degree of impact, level of risk, adaptive capacity, ex: climate-resilient species, ex: ecological corridors to increase ecological connectivity of urban forests.
