Circular metabolism vs linear metabolism: a natural ecosystem exhibits circular metabolism. Input for every output; from one organism to another: modern cities typically exhibit linear metabolism. Inputs and outputs are unconnected, and this needs to change for urban metabolism. Sewage ushed into rivers from population centers = unsustainable open loop: could be improved by going through treatment, so that it could become fertilizer (ex: membrane system) Bulk of world"s energy consumption is within cities, or to and from cities. Signi cant energy conservation can be achieved by combination of energy ef ciency and ef cient energy supply systems. Combined heat and power (chp) stations capture and distribute heat from combustion through district heating system, instead of wasting it: this then provides heat, chilled water, and electricity to ban buildings and factories.
