During a transfusion, the old blood is combined with new blood and cell levels increase by over 50%: method 2: injections, erythropoietin (epo) is a peptide hormone, which stimulates bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. Epo can increase the percentage to 50% or higher: synthetic oxygen carriers are purified proteins or chemicals having the ability to increase the oxygen levels in tissue.
