Physical space (freedom from intrusion and unwanted attention) But: gov"t can invade privacy esp. when it"s a threat to security of others. And: anticipated laws more concerned with forbidding eavesdropping instead of dis of personal data. And: current privacy laws unequipped to handle such pervasive, undirected use: gov"t surveillance. Direct surveillance = classi ed screening, tapping and tracking programs. Indirect surveillance = laws compel private companies to save and hand records and communications: commercial surveillance. Targeting marketing = encourages consumption thru tailored appeals.
