OPTOM 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Corneal Epithelium, Corneal Transplantation, Pseudomonas
Document Summary
Professor of optometry, vision science, infectious diseases & immunity, and. Nutrients from tears and aqueous humor (from the other side) Tear exchange provides right balance of nutrients to keep cornea healthy. If not healthy, then becomes swollen and becomes opaque. Any kind of inflammation is bad for the cornea. Major lens types: hard/rigid cl, not flexible, tear exchange under lens (~10%, don"t cover entire cornea. Not as comfortable: infection rate with this is almost non-existent. The more severe, the greatest opacity is in a circle ring around it. Altering ability of immune cells to protect, killing them. Loaded full of bacteria: rest of the eye is very inflamed, redness (hyperemia) Massive corneal swelling: this is extremely painful! Cornea has massive concentration of sensory nerves. If inflammatory mediators there, lots of pain and stimulation of sensory nerve endings: cl infections, mostly soft cl, extended wear is a risk factor, most worrisome bacterial cause; pseudomonas aeruginosa.
