PB HLTH 162A Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: 2010 Haiti Cholera Outbreak, Vibrio Cholerae, Streptococcus Pneumoniae
Document Summary
Msd (mod-severe diarrhea): fourth leading cause of death among infants/young children (decrease due to better wash & nutrition) Symptoms: sunken eyes & skin, blood in stool (need iv) Environmental enteric dysfunction: damaged intestinal track (=growth stunt) Asymptomatic carriage of pathogens: ( enteric pathogen detection, but no symptoms/negative effects due to dose of pathogen pathogenicity of strain. Microbiome previous infection malaria & streptococcus pneumoniae. Rotavirus: 3rd pathogen associated w/mortality in young children (vaccines help); ie- Haiti cholera outbreak cause: b/c vibrio cholerae from untreated wastewater from un peacekeeper camp dumped into river (--> locals drink untreated surface water, strain of vibrio cholerae that infected locals matched strain that infected un peacekeepers) Other water sources: rainwater catchment, protected spring, motorized water filter systems. Interventions: backpacking water treatments: lifestraw & gravity filters, chlorine dioxide, iodine, uv-c light rays (also: ceramic/sand filtration, flocculent, disinfection, boiling & safe storage )
