PSYCH 131 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Peer Group, Protective Factor
Document Summary
After age 6, kids spend more time with peers than parents. Kids are nonshared environment - make kids in the same family different. Peer group is either risk or protective factor. Selection bias of who our friends are, maybe the way you were raised made you chose certain peers over others. Hard to know if peers are purely environmental or some mixture of selection. Peer sociometric - rather than you saying im popular everyone likes me maybe the best way to know about peers is to ask them about you; preference as opposed to nominations of peers on various traits. Do you like them vs. who in the class fights the most, who is sad a lot. Acceptance - what proportion of your classmates put you in the top 3. Rejection - what proportion of your classmates definitely don"t want to play with you lead to externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Social preference = acceptance - rejection (high score is better)
