PSYCH 140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Attachment Theory, Hebbian Theory, Ethology
Document Summary
Formation of a bond falling in love. Losing a partner grieving over someone. Unchallenged maintenance of a bond security. Renewal of a bond a source of joy. Attachment an affectional tie which one person forms to another that endures over time and distance. Erikson"s stage theory: become attached to people who reliably attend to their needs and who otherwise foster a sense of trus. Motivated by biological drives and desires such as food and water. Drives are powerful and create a state of arousal in human beings. When arousal is reduced and satisfied, pleasure results. Babies attach to people who reduce their arousal and allow them to feel pleasure. The cloth mother, which does not provide nourishment, acts as a secure base, whereas the wire mother, which does provide nourishment, does not. Baby forms a memory in relation to a stimulus. Every new stimulus is compared to those memory stores. Familiarity brings pleasure vs discrepancy elicits fear etc.
