RHETOR 20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Gilles Peress, Alexander Rodchenko, Intertextuality
Document Summary
Afghan girl : west looks at certain parts of the world in a particular way, works through distanciation, too. Pictures can be made in reference to other famous icons. Napalm girl : had to decide if it was okay at the time to publish the image. Decided it was acceptable because the anti-war movement had grown enough: had to already fit into the interpretive conventions of the time, detail, significance, narrative. Civil war dead - photos taken after the fact, didn"t have the technology and means to get photo journalists there on the scene and have them survive. Can"t really tell what the story is: photos of dead americans in ww2 (life magazine) were highly controversial. Makes people panic about the war: needs to keep the figures anonymous. Family wouldn"t be okay with it, possibly, learning about death through news: use of verbal/written words to assign meaning to the photos beyond just death, framing can provide narrative.
