Description
DEPICTING RACE rd Wednesday December 3 , 2014 Rape was seen as a white, middleclass women issue not for women of color? Wasnt seen as an important issue Mass media systematically reproduce stereotypical images of AfricanAmerican women (controlling images throughout time) When the images are so few that thats all people know of certain groups of people Shohat and Stam: burden of representation o Born by people of color and other marginalized groups of society o Media representations are an important area of study and critique for women of racial and sexual minorities o Important because: Not in control of the production of your own images Because there are so few images, any one image carries a great deal of weight (limited range of representation not in the case of wellrepresented people in the media, because one image will not cause any harm as there are a diverse set of images) Mainstream media often operates by using sexualized stereotype Some woman: Degraded and disgusted by the proliferation of African American depiction in popular culture today, in particular hiphop o Who is creating these images and why? o Who is benefiting from these images?
